The Context |
Romans 9-11 with Johannes Gerloff #02

As Christians, we are often used to take statements out of context as God's personal voice providing much-needed direction in our lives. This might be okay because the Holy Spirit indeed speaks in unusual ways. However, if we wish to understand Paul's argument in Romans 9-11, we have to understand his train of thought. I Am Speaking The Truth |
Romans 9-11 with Johannes Gerloff #03

If a normal person stresses that he or she is talking honestly or telling the truth - we are justified to be careful. As a matter of fact: If somebody feels the need to underline his truthfulness, he normally has something to hide. Why is Paul emphasizing in such an extraordinary manner, that he is not lying? The Prayer |
Romans 9-11 with Johannes Gerloff #04

In Romans 9:3 the Apostle expresses a wish. It is, from our point of view, actually, an impossible wish, an unheard-of demand. And the wording in Greek indicates that this is not just wishful thinking, or some kind of pious quest being expressed by someone who is not really serious about what he is saying. Paul is dead-serious and commits himself by means of an oath pleading with the Father in Heaven. Subscribe for weekly videos. Moses Our Teacher |
Romans 9-11 with Johannes Gerloff #05

Paul's prayer in which he commits himself with an oath to be "cursed and cut off from Messiah" seems to be out of mind, theologically absolutely off track. However, there are more people like him. Jeremiah the Prophet |

Not just Paul and Moses, even the priest and prophet Jeremiah resists God's prohibition to pray for the people of Israel. Subscribe for weekly videos. Yeshua the Messiah |
Romans 9-11 with Johannes Gerloff #07

To us, the wishes of Paul, Moses and Jeremiah expressed in discussions with the one, true and only God seem to be absolutely unbalanced, even crazy. From a biblical point of view, they mirror what the Messiah Yeshua - Gentile believers use to call him Jesus Christ - actually not just prayed, but lived. Subscribe for weekly videos. Jacob's Son |
Romans 9-11 with Johannes Gerloff #08

Paul calls those, in whose place he wants to be cursed and cut off from Messiah, "Israelites". Shouldn't he have called them "the Jews" or "the Jewish people" as it would have been self-explanatory in his time? Or, should he not have called them "Sons of Jacob", "House of Jacob" or "Jacob", if he would have preferred a biblical terminology? Subscribe for weekly videos. Hebrews |
Romans 9-11 with Johannes Gerloff #09

Probably, calling the Jewish people "Jacob" or "Jacob's Sons" would have been a little bit harsh. Maybe, the term "the Hebrews" would have been more appropriate?! Subscribe for weekly videos. Israel |
